A key component delivered for DTT’s divertor

A new important system for DTT has arrived in Frascati: the power supplies for the divertor coils.

In magnetic confinement fusion, the divertor is a critical device for managing and extracting heat and impurities from the plasma. DTT’s main goal is to demonstrate innovative solutions for the divertor, also based on advanced and flexible magnetic configurations. For this reason, DTT is equipped with three dedicated, independent coils placed inside the vacuum vessel, close to the divertor.

Factory tests confirmed that each power supply can control the current in its coil up to 5000 A, at 500 V and 10 Hz. Currents of this magnitude make it possible to accurately configure, correct in real time, and sweep the magnetic field in the divertor region. The design also includes protection mechanisms for coils and power supplies against the harmful effects induced by high-current (millions of amperes) and high-temperature (millions of degrees Celsius) plasmas.

The power supply system was manufactured by OCEM Power Electronics, based in Bologna, Italy.

The procurement was funded under Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and was completed in line with the Plan’s schedule.
